Have any of you noticed an association between BEB and restless legs? Mine developed around the same time, and are getting worse at the same rate.

Hi, Ariel-

I can imagine that if the two problems developed at the same time and are getting worse at the same rate, that they may be related.

Have you by chance had your vitamin D level checked? There's been findings of a strong correlation between low vitamin D levels and restless leg syndrome.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22704399

The researchers think that the low vitamin D levels may cause a dopaminergic dysfunction that causes restless leg syndrome. I wonder, if this is true, if this same dysfunction may result in eye muscle spasms.

Medscape is considered a reliable source of medical information. Here is the link to other tests that are recommended for RLS. Magnesium and B12 are both extremely important for muscle function, and making certain that these levels are good may also be helpful.

It's important to work with someone who understands clinical nutrition, if you do have deficiencies. They can help you to figure out how to optimize your diet and supplements in order to feel better. It takes time, though. If this is an issue, it may take weeks to months to build back up the proper levels of vital nutrients in your cells.

Best wishes - I hope this was helpful. Hang in there!

Hi Ariel,

I also have restless legs, and mine, too, seemed to come on very slowly at the same time as I started blinking a lot - and they got worse as I went from blinking to spasming.

I read one article about bleph (link below) that said that one kind of bleph could be triggered by loss of dopamine: "The excitability of trigeminal reflex blinks increases as dopamine is lost with normal aging" - low dopamine apparently reduces spontaneous blinking but increases "reflex" blinking, leading to "reflex blepharospasm."

Since low dopamine is a factor in both "reflex" bleph and restless leg, I do wonder if my problem might be low dopamine. (Unlike many people on the board, I do NOT have dry eyes; but I have been blinking abnormally for years - for at least a decade before getting bleph at age 56. I am now 58.)

But who knows? I also slowly developed hypothyroidism at the same time as restless legs and bleph. I am not yet restored to normal thyroid function by meds (working on it, still adjusting dosage), and my doctor tells me hypothyroidism also causes restless leg syndrome. I will be very curious to see if the leg symptoms go away when my thyroid gets up to speed.

And of course, restless leg can have other causes, such as low iron. I have always been borderline anemic. My daughter recently had an episode of very bad restless legs and even started having the same spasms in her arms and chest. Her doc put her on iron supplements, and she was fine in a week.

Hard to unravel all these things!

Thanks to both Indy and lisao - I *did* have extremely low vit D about 3 years ago my level was 9, low normal = 30). My doc treated me, and a lot of things got better, but the RLS is just worsening. I am not anemic - that was recently tested. I see my doc on Monday - we'll see what she has to say.

Ariel,

I am trying to view your reply but for some reason, I just get a white screen. Maybe it's me, but the rest of the BB works fine for me. Can you copy your reply and re-post? Thanks!

Comes up blank for me, too.

But if you click on View All under the original post & scroll down, you'll see it in full.
